Will Oracle seriously maintain MySQL?

11 Jan, 2010 / Vivek S.

With Oracle's proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems, it is very likely that MySQL will become a part of Oracle and this news has created a lot of panic among MySQL supporters. Majority of them feel Oracle is not going to do any good for MySQL.

But Oracle in their press release has promised to continue development and maintenance of MySQL as a competitive force in the database market.

However MySQL co-founder Monty Widenius, who spent 27 years creating and working on MySQL, is not impressed with Oracle's commitment and is using his personal blog to encourage MySQL supporters to participate in a mass letter-writing campaign to the European Commission so that future of this open-source database is insured.

Majority of supporters want MySQL to be handed over to a suitable third party that can continue to develop it under the GPL.

Now with MySQL's future in doubt, a few developers are also planning to focus on other open-source databases such as PostgreSQL, Firebird, and SQLite.

Anyhow we hope and wish that MySQL gets a good home and Oracle ensures success and longevity of world's most famous open-source database.
